LONDON – Aug. 6 – North Indian & Indian Contemporary Workshop
Aug 6 all-day

A One day Intensive of North Indian & Indian Contemporary Dance with Colleena Shakti.

Colleena Shakti, one of the most sought after teachers of our time is currently in London and offering an exquisite day full of dance. The intensive will split into two beautifully complimentary parts; North Indian dance and Colleena’s new body of work, Indian Contemporary. Come dance in beauty, in strong warrior nature, and in bliss with us on Sunday 6th August.

Part #1 – North Indian Dance

Greatly inspired by folkloric and tribal dances of Rajasthan, the unparalleled grace of classical Kathak dance and the ecstatic music traditions of Sufi Qawwali, Colleena invites us into the rich world of North Indian dance. This workshop will introduce various classical and folkloric techniques of dance including spins, poses and arm patterns, then build up to beautiful gliding phrases of her unique style.

All levels welcome. Please wear a long spinning skirt. We will be spinning a lot in the class!

Part #2 – Indian Contemporary Dance

The core body of Indian classical dance and martial arts utilize imaginative combinations of circles, spirals and complex bends. This new workshop draws from years of careful study and intensive training in several traditional movement modalities of India (Kalarypayattu, Yoga Vinyasa, Odissi classical dance, Kathak classical dance and more). Colleena extracts core muscle movements layered with minute details (such as mudra), together with thematic bodylines to create a powerful and fluid new contemporary style.

Inspiring traditional themes of intention such as: warrior like courage, inner strength and stillness, compassion and surrender, will lead this dance workshop from movement exploration into choreography. A special addition to this workshop will be some exercises in Kalarypayattu, an ancient martial arts form of Southern India.

All levels of dance experience welcomed, however the movements are strong and require a certain degree to stamina and strength, particularly the Kalarypayattu exploration.

Modeled in the same way as a typical day at our school in Rajasthan (Shakti School of Dance), students will receive 4 hours per day of professional dance training, as well as instruction for the subtle practices of yoga, strength training, and philosophy. These additional teachings are the signature teachings Colleena has compiled for her own school’s training programs, which she finds essential support the artist into a deeper experience of dance. This workshop is open to all levels of experience, but please note that classical Indian dance is a rigorous practice that requires a certain level of strength and stamina.

The daily schedule will include:

VINYASA KRAMA YOGA
A highly authentic Yoga practice of slowing the mind and body by deepening the breath. The breath leads each movement through the series by gently awakening subtle energy channels, rather than simply stretching muscle tissue. From asana we build up to Pranayama practices to increase endurance for peak performance, followed by pratyahara and meditation for fine-tuning our concentration skills. We will open each day with these practices, which will take less than an hour to complete.

STRENGTH TRAINING
Specialized movements to build muscle and find balance in order to benefit our dance bodies. These are compiled from Colleena’s extensive background and quest for perfection. The exercises will include inspiration and techniques from: Pilates, Classical Ballet training, Indian martial arts (Chhau and Kalaripayattu) and traditional Odissi warm-ups.

ODISSI TECHNIQUE: Stepping… The first steps of Odissi, but not the last!
Beginners and professionals alike use this “stepping” practice (20 + 2 basic phrases) to refine one’s rhythm sense, develop precision in footwork, find grace in the upper body and hand movements, as well as build stamina, confidence and dexterity through the mantra-like repetition.
During the final few days of our time together, common movements and short dance phrases of the Odissi repertoire will also be shared to give students a taste of what classical choreography feels like. In Odissi, choreographies are traditionally preserved through a lineage and slowly passed on over the years.

INDIAN AESTHTICS THEORY CLASS
Indian classical arts are based on a vast and ancient system of philosophies that interweave and create the context for some of the greatest works of art in human history.

CHOREOGRAPHY CLASSES:  3-5 pm.

Full workshop of 30 hours of class includes these additional 2 hours per day to work on choreography.  Choreography depends on level and is at the discretion of the teacher.  Please email colleenashakti@gmail.com to obtain permission to join this class if you have not previously attended Shakti School of Dance, Rajasthan.

3-4pm: Possibly “Hari OM” Choreography or new item

4-5pm: Mangalacharan Choreography – review and new

TO BRING TO THE WORKSHOP:
– Water bottle
– Small snacks
– Pen and Notebook (for theory class)
– Dance Clothing: Please wear *modest, comfortable dance clothes that allow you to open the knees completely and squat to the floor. Baggy or flared pants are not recommended, because they will get in the way of your intricate footwork. Stretch pants that are tight-fitting at the ankle are best (so your teacher can see your feet).
Indian traditional dance clothing is preferred, which is either a dance sari (with blouse and leggings underneath) or salwaar kameez (tunic and pants), but not required. Additionally, a few practice saris will be available for purchase on the first day of the workshop.

ABOUT THE COURSE:

Vinyasa Krama Yoga
A highly authentic Yoga practice of slowing the mind and body by deepening the breath. The breath leads each movement through the series by gently awakening subtle energy channels, rather than simply stretching muscle tissue. From asana we build up to Pranayama practices to increase endurance for peak performance, followed by pratyahara and meditation for fine-tuning our concentration skills. We will open each day with these practices, which will take less than an hour to complete.

Odissi Technique: ‘Stepping’
The first steps of Odissi, but not the last!

Odissi Choreography
Depending on the level of experience, students will explore a section of choreography to be worked on throughout the intensive. Odissi choreography is intricate with complex footwork and stylized gesture and expression. During the first day, continuing Odissi students will present and ‘brush up’ on previous Choreographies they have learned, then continue to learn a section of a new choreography. Choreography is most importantly, a means of transmitting the subtle approaches imbedded in the Odissi style.

North Indian Dance
Greatly inspired by folkloric and tribal dances of Rajasthan, the unparalleled grace of classical Kathak dance and the ecstatic music traditions of Sufi Qawwali, Colleena invites us into the rich world of North Indian dance. This workshop will introduce various classical and folkloric techniques of dance including spins, poses and arm patterns, then build up to beautiful gliding phrases of her unique style. Please wear a long spinning skirt. We will be spinning a lot in this class!

Indian Fusion Belly Dance
Learn Colleena’s trademark style of Indian Fusion Belly Dance through techniques broken down and drilled, then woven together into several phrases layered with rich details. Integrating details of Indian classical dance, with earthy, strong, fluid belly dance Colleena will share movements that offer a sweet combination of aesthetics to create an elegant Indian mood.

Indian Aesthetic Theory Lecture
The day will conclude with poignant discussion on Indian aesthetic theory. The lecture will explore historical and cultural background of the dance styles we will have worked on through out the day, as well as taking an Indian classical perspective on fundamental theories of what validates a work of art. This section of the workshop is a wonderful chance to open deeper questions you may have on the material covered in the course or simply a question you have been pondering for a long time. Please bring a notebook for this class.

THE TEACHINGS

Colleena Shakti is known for her innovative and highly stylized fusions. While many students go right for the fusion style, they might not realize the qualities that create the nuances of her fusion come from the rigorous practice in Odissi, the meditative quality of Yoga and the free flowing elegance epitomized in North Indian dance. This course is designed to give students an authentic experience in Indian dance and yet experience the artist freedom Colleena’s fusion offers without abandoning the values and theories expressed in Indian classical texts and lineages. The Theory classes are one of the special aspects of Colleena’s work. Students get an invaluable understanding of not only the complex culture from which these traditions come from, but as well a chance for thoughtful reflection into
