Much
of the clothing pieces I bring from India are one of a kind
and antique. The older style dresses are made of much better
materials and the work is immensely finer. As a dancer who performs
in these dresses, skirts and cholis,I need the pieces to be
reliable. I keep this in mind with everything I purchase. The
new pieces I find are usually of the old quality, but never
worn. Rajasthan is quite possibly the most colorful place on
the planet for textiles. You will find bright colors that often
mimic the tones of a vibrant desert sunset. Red is an auspicious
color for women to wear (especially on their wedding day) as
it represents the blood red color of the Mother Goddess.

These
skirts are quite possibly the greatest skirts ever made! Fabricated
of a really nice, strong cotton. Dyed with vegetable and natural
dyes. These skirts are used by the tribal and village women in
rural Rajasthan because of the strength of the cotton. When spinning,
the skirt becomes a beautiful bell shape. A traditional Rajasthani
skirt for dance practice, performance or camping! The colors are
bright and vivid and come in plain, printed or hand tie-dyed.

Shortly
after I created this choli design, customers coined the phrase
‘the perfect choli’. That is exactly what it is! My
vision in creating this design was to mesh my two favorite choli
designs into one; so it would support me like a bra AND it would
be easy to move my arms liberally while dancing. The nature of
the design allows it to fit a wide variety of body shapes. Cap
sleeves allow ample range of motion as well as look stylish no
matter what size upper arms you have. The body of it is made of
soft black cotton, while the breast panels are sparkling tribal
mirror and embroidery work. Two ties come across the open back
and are reinforced to last through vigorous performances. The
mirror/ embroidered pieces are hand sewn by women in villages
of Gujarat (North India).
