Odissi - Choka Stepping 1-10 Instructional DVD
The stepping exercises Choka 1-10 were created by the great Gurus
of the Odissi style to build strength, coordination and rhythm
sense. This DVD offers students a study tool for practicing stepping
in the choka posture of Odissi dance. Each stepping exercise is
broken down carefully and performed at three speeds. This DVD
is filmed on location at Shakti School of Dance ( Pushkar , India
) within the beautiful Rangji temple complex.

A brief history of Odissi classical dance, two prayers to use
at the beginning of your dance practice, Choka 1-10 Stepping Exercises
with breakdown of steps into upper body and lower body, two bonus
chapters on: one handed and two handed mudras as well as a live

For
those of you who have taken my workshops, this is the CD we learned
the Ghoomar dance to. There are 2 versions of the song ‘Ghoomar’
in this CD. The first track is the one we learn in my class. The
other tracks are Rajasthani dance songs in a ‘light classical’
or ‘light pop folk’ style.

This
CD offers a bit of a contrast to the Ghoomar CD. In ‘Rajasthani
Folk Dances’, I collected songs with a more tribal and earthy
sound. This music is nice for those who wish to practice the Khalbelia
dance they have learned with me. Many tracks have an interesting
instrument of Rajasthan, the Morchung. In America it is referred
to as the Jews harp, mouth harp or “Boing Boing”.

Soon...Odissi, classical Indian dance, utilizes beautiful
and descriptive hand positions to aid in the storytelling element
of the dance. This CD is a great study tool for beginners to practice
and memorize mudras for classical Indian or fusing into other
styles of dance.
