Villa Shakti & Saraswati Studios is a beautiful sanctuary on the Greek island of Crete.  Villa Shakti is a home of art and yoga.  After spending nearly 2 decades training in classical dance in India, Colleena Shakti and her partner Matthew had the vision to create a beautiful home and movement studio in the vibrant Mediterranean nature.

The villa is pleasantly located on the ‘sunset side’ of Crete.  The lush rolling hills from the Topolia Gorge down to the sea, are fertile and abundant.  Fruits and vegetables swell on the trees and vines amidst the waving olive trees that fill the land.  The sea and sunshine rejuvenate and inspire artistic reflection and healthy living.  Villa Shakti is just 3 km from the spectacular hiking trails of the Topolia Gorge, a 10 minute drive to beloved local beaches and central to all the famous ones (Elafonissi, Phalasarna and Balos). 

 


THE TRAINING

Shakti Summer School is a professional dance training program designed for the serious dance student who wants to reach new depths in their dance through focused study and hard work in a supportive environment. We keep the group size small to ensure lots of personal attention and our peaceful home environment offers an opportunity for students to connect with each other.

ODISSI CLASSICAL DANCE STUDIES

AT SHAKTI SUMMER SCHOOL

This Odissi Classical Indian Dance training program is ideal for the dancer who wants to work hard, refine details, develop both physical and inner strength and delve in to a culturally rich artistic tradition that allows us to live the path of Yoga and Dance as a means to realize our highest potential!  We welcome our regular students of Shakti School of Dance as well as new students to join in this special summer training.

This year we are offering 4 weeks of intensive Odissi training for various levels.  We suggest the serious odissi student join as many weeks as possible to get the most out of their training time.  A momentum is gained through consistent and focused study!

While the first week is required for beginners, experienced dancers will undoubtedly benefit from refining essential techniques and learning Colleena’s stylized and meticulous approach to Odissi dance fundamentals.  Students will be divided into working groups according to their level of proficiency.  Continuing students who have learned choreographies will spend time refining and “polishing” repertoire items or possibly new compositions, arasa or choreography based on their ability. 

Our daily curriculum includes: morning yoga, exercise and therapeutic practices, Odissi stepping techniques, anga shudhi practice, repertoire review, new compositions (arasa in various or item), and evening theory class.  Theory classes focus on culture, history and context of Odissi classical dance, music theory, Indian aesthetic theory, yoga philosophy and more.  32 hours of dance training in total is spread over an alternating schedule of 6 hours (Mon, Wed and Fr) and 4.5 hour days with afternoons off (Tues, Thurs, Sat).  Saturdays include a group day trip to one of the many incredible beaches of archeological sites of the island.  The schedule and program is designed to maximize students study time and accelerate their growth in Odissi dance.

Weeks 1-3 are open to Odissi students of all levels, while Week 4 is only for students enrolled in the Odissi Diploma Program.  To find out more about the Diploma Program, please visit: www.colleenashakti.com

Odissi Diploma Program students are required to attend Week 3 & 4.  Tuition for the training is included in annual Program fees, however students will need to register for their accommodation option.

Beginning Odissi Students:  Week 1 *required

We welcome brand new students to join Week 1 and continue on through weeks 2-3 if they choose.  Everyone needs to start some where!  Odissi is open to all applicants who have an open mind and thirst for learning a highly refined classical dance form deeply rooted in culture and religious tradition.  Please keep in mind, Odissi as a classical dance form requires a significant degree of stamina and fitness, a strong sense of self discipline and a willingness to participate in specific cultural practices.

ATS American Tribal Style Belly Dance Intensive with Philippa Moirai

Dates: Aug 12 -16

Immerse yourself in a wonderfully rich experience of American Tribal Style® belly dance with Philippa Moirai this Spring! Diving into a selection of dynamic movements from the FatChanceBellyDance® fast and slow repertoire, Philippa will guide you through a series of drills focusing on strong dance technique and smooth transitions, individually and within groups. Working with requests from those attending, classical and modern movements will be covered, with plenty of dance time. The first few days will be steeped in technique, building up to more complex concepts and advanced formations in the final days. Treat yourself to a full immersion of dance, as you develop and refine your Tribal technique, whilst connecting with other dancers in the inspiring beautiful setting of Greece!

Indian Fusion Belly Dance Immersion with Colleena Shakti

Indian Fusion – Level 1: Module 1

Dates: Aug 18-25

Learn Colleena Shakti’s trademark Indian Fusion Belly Dance in a cohesive, methodical  and inspiring way. Integrating many details of Indian classical dance, with earthy, strong, fluid belly dance; this trademark dance style is a seamless union of aesthetics that create an elegant Indian mood.

Level 1: Module 1 – Indian Fusion Belly Dance, offers a variety of fundamental techniques for strength, precision and mastery in Indian Fusion Belly Dance as well as a theoretical exploration of key artistic concepts, cultural background and tools to grow in your dance.

Techniques and dance vocabulary will be established through drills, group exercises and hand outs such as: Level 1 foot and hand positions, arm patterns, postures, spins, traveling steps, the signature first 10 ‘moves’ and 10 phrases of Colleena’s Indian Fusion Belly Dance vocabulary.  Dance theory classes include lecture topics such as: Indian Aesthetic theory,  basic anatomy for dancers, terminology and stylistic influence. 33 hours of dance training in total is spread over an alternating schedule of 6 hours (Mon, Wed and Fr) and 4.5 hour days with afternoons off (Tues, Thurs, Sat).  Saturdays include a group day trip to one of the many incredible beaches of archeological sites of the island.

Some basic Belly Dance experience is required.  Indian dance experience is helpful, but not required.

Beginning = Basic fitness, self-discipline in the classroom, understanding of what ‘professional’ dance training means and willingness to explore new possibilities in dance.

Intermediate =  Higher level of fitness and skill, 2 + years of dance in the style which you are applying for: Odissi or Belly Dance, professional classroom etiquette,  ability in: spins, footwork and more complex movement patterns.   *to join week 4 students are required to send in a video of their performance.


ACCOMMODATION

Room Options:

 

Villa Shakti: Double Share Room (2 per room, shared bathroom)

The rooms at Villa Shakti includes bath towel set, Greek beach towel, bedding and blankets, table fan, WIFI, access to apartment kitchen, spacious living room and dining area, cable TV.  Places are limited.  The house is strictly vegetarian.

 

Village Apartments: Dorm Style (4 per room, shared bathroom)

These traditional restored apartments are a 5 -10 minute walk from Villa Shakti on peaceful a country road.  The apartments are in a rustic traditional village with a plentiful organic garden, traditional orthodox church, goats, a fresh spring fountain and many flowers!

 

Finding other Local Accommodation 

If you are looking for a bit more privacy, you will find many other villas and apartments nearby our village of Aikirgiannis (Topolia).  We suggest you have a look at Airbnb, VRBO as well as booking.com for best options.  We recommend looking in the Topolia area and no farther than Kissamos so travel time to classes are not an issue.  You can use the FB event page to post if you are looking for others to share a villa with you.  We suggest you have your own rental car for this option.  **Book your own accommodation well in advance! Greece is a very popular summer destination and all the rooms will book up!

 


 

FOOD

 

Our in-house catering team are mainly local Greek women with a passion for cooking!   We enjoy offering a healthy Vegetarian take on local Cretan recipes.  Cretan and Greek cuisine is full of roasted vegetables, rices dishes, cucumber salads and of course, a decadent selection of homemade local cheeses!  Occasionally we change up the menu by preparing mild Ayurvedic Indian food or Italian pasta, etc.  All meals are served buffet style – all you can eat!  Special dietary needs such as vegan, gluten free, and allergies can be catered to with prior notice.  *Our villa is strictly Vegetarian in celebration of life! Yet we can offer you local goat, sheep and cow cheese and a range of farm to table dairy products as well as eggs.

Breakfast:  Coffee/tea, fruit, toast and spreads, yogurt, granola, porridge, smoothie.

Lunch:  Main dish,  2 salads, bakery breads, spreads, vegetable side dishes, local olive oil / olives, ice teas infusions.

TRANSPORTATION

 

Arrival / Departure

Guests will want to arrive to the closest airport: Chania (CHQ).  Airport it is a 1 hour drive to the villa.  Heraklion is 3-4 hours drive.  *Students MUST arrive in time for orientation meeting on Sunday evening.

 

Most visitors on Crete rent a car to enjoy exploring the wild nature and beaches.  This is what we always recommend to guests since there are many secret beaches and isolated trails to discover on the Western side of the island within an hours drive.
