Classical Indian dance from the temples of East India
Odissi dance is a beautiful, expressive dance that takes one through the fullest range of emotions. This devotional dance has been passed on from Guru to disciple for over 2,000 years, making it the oldest known temple dance still in practice. Originating in the temples of Orissa (East India), Odissi dance is taught as a means of worship and personal surrender. It is praised for having a distinctly feminine style, with exaggerated hip curvatures, and graceful movements of the torso. Complex footwork and challenging postures blend sweetly with facial expression and soft eye movements to convey the moods of the epic stories told through dance. Colleena teaches this beginning class. We cover exercises and stepping in this class.

  Rajasthani snake charmers dance
From the desert region of India, Rajasthan, comes the snake charming dance of the Khalbelia Gypsies. Wild and sensuous, the skilled dancers accentuate subtle, snake-like movements. As they dance, they fall into rapid spins, whirling their large black skirts adorned with ribbons of color. Local Khalbelia women teach this class.

  Arabic Indian fusion
‘Belly Dance’ comes from various folk dances throughout the Middle East. As it has been passed on through generations and traveled around the world, we have seen many changes, though one thing remains…the subtlety, power and grace of the female is celebrated through the dance. In the beginning it was a dance women did for each other in celebration. It is in this spirit, women can be both sensuous and empowered at the same moment. Colleena teaches an introduction to her own unique style of Belly dance with hints of Indian style.

  Ghoomar, Chedi, Bawaii, etc.

Nagara is a Rajasthani folk drum played with drum sticks. Nathuji Solinky, a master percussionist, teaches in a way that makes music very attainable for the beginner and challenging for advanced students who want to excel. A great introduction to understanding Indian rhythms.

“Set in the beautiful temple in the center of Pushkar, India, Colleena’s dance classes are something to be remembered. I took the Khalbelia dance intensive and highly recommend it to both beginners and experienced dancers. Colleena managed to blend the western style format of class structure and the Indian version of learning through looking, in a cohesive and helpful manner. The class size was small and personal and the ambience of devotion to dance was all around. The local ‘Gypsy’ women were friendlier than I could have imagined, always laughing and smiling. I thoroughly enjoyed Colleena’s 2 week intensive program as it provided a unique look into a rare lifestyle and art form.
