June 14/15/16
7-8:30 pm (EEST Athens time)
Explore the elegant movement vocabulary of the 108 Karanas: dynamic dance sequences described in the Natya Shastra and reconstructed by Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam.
We will start with an engaging introduction to the aesthetic vision of the Natya Shastra, students will discover the building blocks of the Karanas - including hasta, chāri and foundational movement principles. Through careful breakdown and practice, these elements will be woven into an expressive dance composition rooted in the Odissi tradition.
Shiva (as both Lord of Dance and Supreme Yogi), reveals a movement language that feels surprisingly familiar, bridging dance, yoga and martial arts. These graceful and powerful forms offer a fascinating glimpse into a shared movement heritage that continues to echo through Indian classical dance today.
Topics include:
• Natya Shastra Theory & Aesthetics
• Hasta Karana & Nritta Hasta
• Chāri
• Karana Practice
• Odissi Movement & Choreography weaving it all together
Some previous Odissi experience is helpful, but curious movers from all backgrounds are invited to explore the timeless dance of Nataraja.
